Second Born Unicorn fa parte di una serie di brani solistici (First Born Unicorn ne era il primo, per flauto amplificato), scritta per esplorare la scrittura e il timbro dei diversi strumenti. Ogni brano della serie riproduce suoni e timbri complessi (flauto polifonico, pianoforte orchestrale), chiedendo al solista di porsi in relazione strettissima, quasi simbiotica, con il proprio strumento.
L'esecutore prepara lo strumento, canta con esso, senza nessuna volontà teatrale, semmai nascondendosi dentro di esso, cadendone nel suono. A questo scopo Second Born Unicorn sfrutta anche notazioni alternative, indicazioni per un'esecuzione che esasperi la fisicità dei suoni.

Second Born Unicorn is part of a series of solo pieces (First Born Unicorn was the first one, for amplified flute) written to explore the style and timbre of different instruments. Each piece of the series reproduces complex sounds and timbres (polyphonic flute, orchestral piano), requiring the soloist to enter in an extremely close, almost symbiotic, relation with his instrument.
The performer prepares the instrument, sings with it, without any theatrical intention, on the contrary hiding inside the instrument, falling into the sound. For this purpose Second Born Unicorn also exploits alternative notation, indications for a performance that exasperates the physicality of the sounds.
